The most important skill that any teacher can impart to her learners is the ability to read. Reading is a prerequisite to progress successfully through the education system, it promotes confidence, boots self-esteem, and it provides access to new information and knowledge that will help in life-long learning.

It's All About Stories

The Masikhulisane Reading Programme was introduced as a pilot programme in 2014 in response to the low level of literacy results of South African learners. Research has indicated that learners from the Eastern Cape struggle to meet the reading requirements for their age groups in both Home Language (isiXhosa) and English.

This programme has been co-created with the teachers from our two pilot schools, Enqileni and Mboniselo. Without the co-operation and support of the Principals, teachers and teacher assistants there would be no “childrens’ story” to tell.

We can make our own Storybooks!

The end of term Reading Club activities took place over four days during the last week of term (29 and 30 September and 1 and 2 October). Each day The Gr 6 learners of Enqileni and Mboniselo primary schools spent an hour and a half participating in Nal’ibali Reading Club activities and an hour and a half engaged in bookmaking.
