At a Governance team meeting on 25 January 2013 it was reported that a request was received from an association of ministers (IDAMSA) for GMSAF to undertake training of the ministers as facilitators so that they could work with School Governing Bodies in their communities

Learning about School Governance: Perspective of a Volunteer Community Facilitator

On behalf of all the volunteer community facilitators (VCFs), I am forwarding a word of gratitude to our governance mentors who have been with us through thick and thin, from when we started this course in November 2013 at the Missionvale campus of NMMU, to January 2014 when we moved to where we are today at ETC, and then until December 2014 when we graduated.

On the 25th of August the final contact session with participants on the Facilitating Learning in Development Contexts Short Learning Programme (SLP) was held. Of the original seventeen participants who enrolled in the programme thirteen have successfully completed the programme.

Voluntary Community Facilitators Make a Difference

Our 2015 Governance short learning programme (SLP) started in May with 190 participants from 67 schools. The 6 appointed Governance Mentors (the services of 2 also extensively used elsewhere in the programme) desperately needed help in implementing the SLP. This help has been provided by 13 Voluntary Community Facilitators (VCF).

In 2014 our Governance team ran a Governance and Community Leadership Programme for School Governing Bodies (SGB’s), an accredited certificated course from NMMU. At the end of the programme the Governance team undertook an impact assessment to determine if and how the goals of the programme had been met.
